As a child I loved reading the Chronicles of Narnia. I remember having such a sense of wonder at the adventures contained within it's pages. As I have grown, I have come to find a deeper appreciation and meaning to the intricately woven stories.
Today, one of my favorite scriptures is John 1:5 "A light shines in the darkness and the darkness has not overcome it." For so many, myself included, darkness has been a regular occurrence. But somewhere, if we look hard enough, there is always a light that cannot be overcome. A light that reminds us why we are here and draws us forward.
I see in the story of the lamppost and it's creation how something that was meant to cause harm is now a beacon of hope to those who may be lost and wandering. The lamppost should not have existed, but it did. It should not have the ability to go on endlessly without care or maintenance, but it did. We see it in the beginning and again at the end; both times of transition.
The lamppost draws the line in the wood between this world and the next, the old life and the new. What better description of the counseling relationship? Let's draw the line between old and new together and light the way to hope and healing.
